Biography
Noël Coypel, born in Paris on December 25, 1628, and died in the same city on December 24, 1707, was a French painter. At an early age, he joined a studio where Charles Errard sought his help, which gave him the opportunity to be included in the king's commissions. He painted several pictures for the king's apartments in the Louvre, for Cardinal Mazarin's apartments and, at Louis XIV's wedding, for the ceilings of the queen's apartment. Under Colbert's superintendence, Noël Coypel was appointed director of the French Academy in Rome, where he worked from 1673 to 1675. On his return to France, he again worked for the King, and was appointed Director of the Royal Academy of Painting on August 13, 1695. In 1705, at the age of 77, he undertook the fresco paintings above the high altar in the Eglise des Invalides. This was to be his last work.
