Jules-Eugène Lenepveu, born December 13, 1819 in Angers and died October 16, 1898 in Paris, was a French painter. After studying at a drawing school, he began training at the École royale et spéciale des beaux-arts in Paris in 1838. He was a pupil of François-Édouard Picot. He won the Prix de Rome in 1847 and arrived in Rome the following year. His pension ended on December 31, 1852, but he remained in Italy for a further two years. On his return to France, he produced large-scale historical compositions for the Palais de Justice in Paris, the Hospice Général in Angers and the ceiling of the Nouvel Opéra in Paris, among others. Lenepveu's ceiling at the Opéra was later covered by a work by Marc Chagall. Lenepveu was director of the French Academy in Rome from 1873 to 1878.
