Biography

Joseph-Nicolas Robert-Fleury, born August 8, 1797 in Cologne and died May 5, 1890 in Paris, was a French painter. He was sent to Paris by his family and became a pupil of Antoine-Jean Gros. Robert-Fleury then traveled to Italy, where he perfected his skills, before returning to France and exhibiting at the Salon of 1824. In 1850, he succeeded François Granet as a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. By decree of 1863, he became professor and then director of the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Robert-Fleury was Director of the French Academy in Rome from 1866 to 1867.
