Biography
Jean Alaux, born January 15, 1786 in Bordeaux and died March 2, 1864 in Paris, was a French painter. He first studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, in Pierre Lacour's studio, before entering the École de Peinture, de Sculpture et d'Architecture in Paris in 1807. He studied with François-André Vincent and Pierre-Narcisse Guérin. He was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1815 and arrived in Rome the same year. During his stay, he worked on the decoration of the Trinité des Monts church and made a trip to southern Italy in 1818. On his return to France, he created decorations for the Louvre and the historical galleries of Versailles. Jean Alaux was director of Villa Medici from 1847 to 1852.
