1816 - 1823

Biography

Charles Thévenin, born in Paris on July 12, 1764, and died in Paris on February 28, 1838, was a French painter. He was a pupil of François-André Vincent. His historical paintings, depicting scenes from the French Revolution, brought him some success. He was awarded the Premier Prix de peinture in 1791 and went to Italy, to Florence, before returning to Rome in 1801. Thévenin was director of the French Academy in Rome from 1816 to 1823. Pierre Guérin had originally been chosen, but declined. On his return to Paris, Thévenin was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1825, then appointed curator of the Cabinet des Estampes at the Bibliothèque Nationale.
