Biography
Charles François Poerson, born in Paris in 1653 and died in Rome on September 2, 1725, was a French painter. He was a pupil of Charles Poerson, his father, and of Noël Coypel. Poerson was appointed director of the French Academy in Rome in 1704, a post he held until his death in 1724. Poerson was, however, on bad terms with Mansart, then Superintendent of Buildings. As a result, the Academy fell into neglect during the early years of his directorship. Mansart was succeeded, on his death in 1708, by the Duc d'Antin, who, unlike his predecessor, faithfully supported the Academy. Charles François Poerson is buried in Rome, in the church of Saint-Louis des Français. His tomb was sculpted by Pierre de L'Estache, fellow during his directorship and later himself director of the Academy, from 1737 to 1738.
