Period: 2015-2016
Profession: Composer Fabrice Denys a.k.a. Fantazio was born in 1972. At age of 15, he inherited a bass and started to gradually tame it. He started playing in the streets giving solo performances when possible. He then moved to Beijing for a year, and later to Berlin, where he continued working at improvisation and where he remained until 1999. Concerned about the rupture of rhythms, situations and angles of attack, he has collaborated with numerous musicians in concert halls as well as theaters. He has developed “rugged” performances in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America, always accompanied by his bass and his voice that he “twists” in the various languages he has by now mastered: Italian, Spanish, Chinese, English and French. His shows are becoming situations where music, theatrical and poetic performance combine, each time delving a bit deeper into the links between intimate troubles and social unrest. The Fantazio project at Villa Medici consists in assembling scattered elements from popular and erudite Western culture. This ensemble will then be molded together to create a sound piece in French and Italian, according to the systolic-diastolic movement. It will therefore be a work of writing and rewriting made up of multiple components: materials gathered from his experience, writings, music, text, interviews, speeches, lectures, monologues, on site improvisations or recordings, including echo-sounds captured from the Villa, from Rome and from other Italian cities. From this « matter », he will carry out an in-depth research on the ups and downs of both personal and collective problems.
