Villa Medici 2022-2023 Fellows

Following a selection procedure that saw 534 applications submitted, the jury of the competition for Fellows at the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici, 16 winners were chosen.

This new class of Fellows, representing 9 artistic disciplines and 4 different nationalities, will be welcomed at Villa Medici from September 2023 for a one-year residency in creation, experimentation or research.
As part of the programme, Fellows will be provided with a residence grant, accommodation and a workspace.

The following have been selected as Fellows for the year 2023-2024:

Madison Bycroft – Visual arts
Laure Cadot – Restoration of works of art or monuments
Céline Curiol – Literature
Jean-Charles de Quillacq – Visual arts
Ophélie Dozat – Architecture
Hamedine Kane – Visual arts
Kapwani Kiwanga – Visual arts
Laure Limongi – Literature
Morad Montazami – Art history
Justinien Tribillon – Exhibition curator

The selection jury was this year made up of Sam Stourdzé, director of the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici and president of the jury; Tarek Atoui, artist and composer; Victorine Grataloup, director of Triangle-Astérides, contemporary art center; Maylis de Kerangal, writter; Annick Lemoine, Director of the Petit Palais, Museum of Fine Arts of the City of Paris; Philippe Quesne, director; François Quintin, delegate for the visual arts at the General Directorate for Artistic Creation of the Ministry of Culture; Marie-Cécile Zinsou, President of the Fondation Zinsou and President of the Board of Directors of the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici.
To analyse the applications, the jury called upon the expertise of sixteen personalities appointed from the French Administration or its public establishments.

During their year of residence, the Fellows will be invited to present their work at events that will punctuate Villa Medici programme:

– The Nuit Blanche, organised in the autumn of 2022, will be the occasion to hold a preliminary exhibition of their multidisciplinary work and will take the form of a nocturnal stroll through the gardens and salons of Villa Medici;

– Throughout the year, concerts, readings, lectures, performances and events will be presented as a carte blanche to the Fellows and will involve international guest artists;

The end-of-year event, a highlight of the summer season, will offer a glimpse of the diversity of the disciplines represented and the fertile cross-fertilisation that takes place during the year between the Fellows’ projects.

Applications:

  • Of the 534 applications representing 570 candidacies, there were 273 women, 290 men, 7 people who do not represent themselves on a binary gender spectrum, 32 groups of 2 and 2 groups of 3.

Class of 2023-2024 Fellows:

  • There are 9 women and 6 men and 1 non-binary person in the class.
  • The average age of the fellows is 39 years old.
