The First Motion of the Immovable (2018) is Sebastiano d’Ayala Valva’s first feature documentary. The childhood memory of hearing terrifying music pushed the director onto the trail of his mysterious forefather, the Italian avant-garde composer Giacinto Scelsi (1905-1988). The film offers a sonic and musical journey in the footsteps of Scelsi, who never ceased to liberate the energy of sound, creating his pieces in a kind of intuitive improvisation.

The First Motion of the Immovable was broadcast on ARTE and has won several awards including a special mention at the Turin Film Festival and Best First Appearance Award at the International Documentary Filmfestival of Amsterdam (IDFA).

Sebastiano d’Ayala Valva is an Anglo-Italian film director born in London in 1978. He graduated from the Institute of Political Studies in Paris in 2003, and has directed several documentaries including Transvestites Also Cry in 2005, La casa del padre in 2009 and Farewell to the Father in 2020.
