Villa Medici 2022-2023 Fellows

Like every year, September will mark the arrival of the Fellows of the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici! The sixteen Fellows of the 2021-2022 class will join Villa Medici as of September 1st to start their one-year residency of creation, experimentation and research. During their stay, they will receive a residency grant, housing and workspace, and will be invited to take part in the activities and program of Villa Medici. This year, the Fellows represent seven art fields and eight nationalities

During their year of residence, the fellows will be invited to present their work at events that will punctuate Villa Medici programme:

The Nuit Blanche, organised in the autumn of 2022, will be the occasion to hold a preliminary exhibition of their multidisciplinary work and will take the form of a nocturnal stroll through the gardens and salons of Villa Medici;

– Throughout the year, concerts, readings, lectures, performances and events will be presented as a carte blanche to the fellows and will involve international guest artists;

A restitution event will offer a glimpse of the diversity of the disciplines represented and the fertile cross-fertilisation that takes place during the year between the fellows’ projects.


About the Fellows’ Open Call

Each year, the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici organizes an international competition to select Fellows according to a criterion of excellence. The competition is open to French-speaking artists, creators and researchers, regardless of nationality. Candidates may apply in all disciplines of artistic creation and craftsmanship as well as in the history and theory of the arts, the restoration of works of art or monuments. Applications are examined by a jury of qualified personalities appointed each year by the French Ministry of Culture. The competition takes place in two stages : a first phase of study of the applications and a second phase of hearings of the pre-selected candidates. For the 2022 selection, 542 applications were submitted and the selection jury of the French Accademy of Rome – Villa Medici selected 16 winners.

The selection jury was this year made up of Sam Stourdzé, director of the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici and president of the jury; Francesca Alberti, director of the art history department at the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici; Anne-James Chaton, writer; Francesca Corona, artistic director of the Festival d’Automne; Céline Kopp, director of Le Magasin, an art centre in Grenoble; Mauro Lanza, composer; François Quintin, advisor for the visual arts at the Directorate General of Artistic Creation, representing the General Director of Artistic Creation; Lili Reynaud-Dewar, visual artist.

Applications:

  • Of the 542 applications representing 574 candidacies, there were 287 women, 278 men, 9 others, 30 groups of 2 and 30 groups of 3.

Class of 2022-2023 fellows:

  • There are 12 women and 4 men in the class.
  • The average age of the fellows is 38 years old.
  • This year, two new profiles are joining the class:
    a choreographic fellow, Lasseindra Ninja, and a legal fellow, Sarah Vanuxem.
