Profession: Emmanuel Carlier was born near Paris in 1975. Marginally to his historical studies at the Sorbonne, he was an apprentice violin-maker in the atelier of François Perrin, a passion he had to abandon for several years when he worked as a journalist. It was his encounter with bow-maker Gilles Duhaut that changed his life. In 2005 he returned to his workbench and learned how to construct bows under the guidance of the Master. After that he entered the Maison Bernard in Brussels where he developed a taste for antique bows and perfected his restoration techniques with Pierre Guillaume. Since 2009, he has divided his time between Brussels and Paris, where he has his own workshop. In 2010 he was awarded first prize for a viola bow and a second prize for a cello bow at the international competition of violin and bow-making in MIttenwald, Germany. In 2011, impressed by his work, he got a grant from the the Marcel Vatelot Foundation to develop his atelier. In 2012 he received three gold medals from the international competition of the Violin Society of America in Cleveland for the categories: violin, cello and contrabass.
