Caroline Déodat (1987) is an artist, filmmaker and researcher. She holds a doctorate in anthropology from EHESS and trained at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Lyon as part of the postgraduate program in Art. Through her films and installations, she explores the spectral dimensions of the moving image, moving between fiction and ethnography, theory and documentary cinema. Drawing on his obsessions with processes of archiving and alienation, with history and myths of violence, he seeks to recompose narratives and weave together silenced genealogies, evoking haunted memories, deferred archives and oral images.

Her project at Villa Medici

Caroline will develop a film and installation project on the ancestral myths of Rome. Starting with Western projective images of ancient Rome, her investigation will focus on Roman law and the poetics of the Aeneid, which she will confront with the political fictions of contemporary identity rituals (cinema, tourism, and law). Combining fiction and experimental ethnography, peplum archives and documentary cinema, this work will unfold a speculative history of métissage and question the contemporary legacies of the figure of Aeneas. Are we the heirs of this stranger who, after his journey across the Mediterranean, became one of Rome’s founding heroes?
