Start of residency 03/06/2024
End of residency 29/06/2024

Clémentine Bruno, born in 1994 in France, is an artist who lives and works between London and Paris. She obtained her MA in painting from the Slade School of Fine Art in London in 2019 and from Goldsmiths University in 2017. She has had two solo exhibitions at Project Native Informant and a duo exhibition at Chapter NY, New York. In 2022, she presented a solo exhibition at Paris International. Her practice references dominant, art historical or institutional methods of visual representation. Through various processes of decontextualization-and in diverse media including painting, sculpture and installation, her practice subvert the familiar and questions the status of the author and authenticity of artworks. Her ghostly forms, obscured imagery, abstracted still lives, vacant landscapes, and fictive environments acknowledge and resist established frameworks for passive visual consumption.

Her project at Villa Medici

During her residency at Villa Medici, Clémentine Bruno aims to strengthen interest in the status of the author and artistic authenticity. During this period, she visits sites such as the Roman catacombs and Roman churches, significant locations representing the remnants of Byzantine art heritage. She undertakes an in-depth investigation into the artistic techniques employed in these places to challenge established conventions.
