Autunno in Musica

The French Academy in Rome presents the fourth edition of the festival Autunno in Musica from 16 to 30 October 2014 . The festival, created in 2011, aims to celebrate the musical bond between France and Italy. This fourth edition of Autunno in Musica proposes an original sophisticated program with renowned names such as Claude Debussy , Prix de Rome in 1884, as well as lesser-known composers Théodore Dubois or Gaston Salvayre , also winners of the prestigious prize. «Refusés» composers Benjamin Godard , Ernest Chausson and, above all Maurice Ravel , who in 1905 was only awarded Second Prix de Rome, causing a great controversy, are also represented. Important women composers will be well represented by Nadia Boulanger , Marie Jaëll , Henriette Renié and Cécile Chaminade . The program of this edition revisits a fundamental phase of the cultural and artistic bonds between France and Italy: the beginnings of World War I , whose hundredth anniversary we are celebrating this year. The anxieties and concerns generated by the conflict had a marked effect on several fellows in residence at the French Academy in Rome, veiling their works with melancholy. The year 2014 also celebrates the 250 th anniversary of the death of Jean-Philippe Rameau , one of the Enlightenment’s most important composers. The festival opens Thursday, October 16 (presentation of the program at 7.45 p.m., concert 8.30 p.m.) with the concert entitled In the country where war is waged (Au pays où se fait la guerre), with the performances of mezzo-soprano Isabelle Druet and the Quatuor Giardini. The public can listen to pieces by Nadia Boulanger, Claude Debussy, Gaetano Donizetti, Jacques Offenbach and Gabriel Fauré. Friday, October 17 (presentation of the program at 7.45 p.m., concert 8.30 p.m.) the Trio Arcadis will be on stage for a concert entitled From one postwar period to another . The Trio will perform works by Gabriel Fauré, Gaston Salvayre and Ernest Chausson. Saturday, October 18 (presentation of the program at 7.45 p.m., concert 8.30 p.m.), the pianist David Bismuth will perform works by Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy, Cécile Chaminade and Marie Jaëll. The protagonist of the concert on Sunday, October 19 (presentation of the program at 5.15 p.m. concert 6.00 p.m.) is Emmanuel Ceysson, who will play works by Carlos Salzedo, Gabriel Fauré, André Caplet and Henriette Renié on the harp, French Romantic instrument par excellence. Wednesday, October 29 (8.30 p.m.) will be the turn of Les Folies françoises with a program entitled Rameau, a gallery of portraits . The quartet will perform songs by Jean-Philippe Rameau and Antoine Forqueray for the Rome public. Thursday, October 30 (8.30 p.m.) Autunno in Musica will close with a concert at the Accademia Filarmonica Romana entitled Focus Rameau: the triumph of the harpsichord .
