Of Franco-Moroccan origin, Mouna Saboni was born in 1987 in Rennes and is a photographer. After obtaining a Master’s degree in Social and Solidarity Economy, she joined the National School of Photography in Arles, where she graduated in 2012. Her work revolves around the concepts of identity, memory, and the relationship individuals have with their lands. Her photographic approach oscillates between documentary and poetic perspectives. Since 2018, she has formally developed her writing by integrating it visually into her photographs.

Her project at Villa Medici

Mouna Saboni aims to develop a project entitled “Erased Identities” focused on the notion of identity as a complex and ever-changing construction. Her goal is to explore this concept through a photographic exploration of Rome’s chaotic history, conducting graphic and artistic research based on the collection of palimpsests from the Vatican Apostolic Library. At a time when we witness a global resurgence of identitarian closure, she wants to remind us that our identity and present are formed by a long history of constructions where memory plays a crucial role. Mouna Saboni seeks to examine how visual and artistic work can carry the traumas of the past to understand the present. In an archaeological approach, she intends to weave connections between different periods and bring forth the voices of the soil, stones, and the past. “Erased Identities” will serve as a resistance to forgetfulness.
