This is what the power of fiction is: to tell the real while displacing it, even going beyond it, in order to be able to talk about it better” Anne Paulicevich

Working Girls is a film released in 2020 that deals with “the heroism of women“, in the words of the screenwriter and artistic director. After several months of immersion in the world of prostitution, Anne Paulicevich wrote Working Girls, which marks her directorial debut alongside Frédéric Fonteyne.

This film tells the story of Axelle, Dominique and Conso, and their double life once they cross the border, when they become Athena, Circe and Hera in their whorehouse. It depicts their personal struggle and the birth of their solidarity when faced with adversity. Political and committed, this film questions the geographical, social and emotional borders linked to the complex issue of prostitution, and highlights the daily life of a forgotten minority.

Working Girls premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival and after travelling to several other festivals, was chosen to represent Belgium at the 93rd Academy Awards in 2020.

This screening will be held as part of the residency of the director duo Anne Paulicevich and Frédéric Fonteyne at Villa Medici. They are currently preparing their next feature film A Man Of The World, which will be shot in Rome and Florence. Anne Paulicevich and Frédéric Fonteyne will stay twice at Villa Medici, from 23 to 30 January and from 6 to 12 March.
