Lucas Malbrun was born in Munich. After studying visual arts at ENSAD Paris, from which he graduated in 2015, he developed a dual practice between still and animated images. His graduation film Quand le fleuve se tait won the Short Film Award at the Toronto Film Week 2016. He began an artistic collaboration with Marie Larrivé that gave birth to the music videos Tropicool for Gablé, which was screened at the Centre Pompidou and Saba. Made entirely with felt pen, the latter gave rise to an exhibition of the same name at the Cité internationale des arts. The multimedia exhibitions Stupeur/Fureur and Traversées du Marais at the Cité internationale des arts explore the narrative through still and moving images. Margarethe, his first personal short film, will be completed in early 2023.

Project at Villa Medici

L’empereur sur le balcon is an animated short film project. It tells the story of an officer in the Roman army who does everything to gain power: he is an exemplary officer, adored by his soldiers. After winning a difficult battle against the barbarians, he manages to turn his soldiers against the current emperor. At the height of his quest, he manages to be proclaimed Roman emperor in his own right. But just as he has reached his ultimate goal, at the height of his power, he suddenly feels a deep emptiness that heralds his impending downfall.
