Maxim Cain
Maxim Cain is a comics writer and a pastor in the Pyrenees of the Ariege. He was published in the magazine Bento (Prix de la bande dessinée alternative, Angoulême 2022) and published with Léo Duquesne, in the fortnightly La Disparition, the bittersweet strips La mer est calme comme un lac. He is currently working on Démontagner, a pastoral tale between testimony and fiction that recounts his last season on the mountain pasture of Mont Roche. The book will be published by Actes Sud.
The ADAGP, the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici and the Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l’image (CIBDI – Angoulême) are committed to supporting the vitality and diversity of comics through a creative residency aimed at supporting an innovative project by a comics author each year.
The selection committee, made up of Nejib, comics author, Pili Munoz, director of the CIBDI authors’ house, and Frédéric Blancart, head of the Villa Medici Fellows and Residents Office, chose author Maxim Cain for his Démontagner project. The jury was impressed by the narrative and graphic capacity of the project, but also by the author’s sincere approach, his legitimacy in dealing with the subject and his particular vision of the relationship between man and animal.
About the Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l’image
The Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l’image is a public cultural cooperation institution created by the department of Charente, the French Ministry of Culture, the city of Angoulême and the region of New Aquitaine, dedicated to comics and images. It brings together a comics museum, exhibition galleries, a heritage library, a specialised public library, a documentation centre, an international residence for authors (La Maison des Auteurs), a reference bookshop and an arthouse cinema. La Cité has the first patrimonial collection of comics in Europe and actively supports young creators, with more than 50 authors in residence, more than 60% of whom are foreign authors. Each year, the institution welcomes more than 200,000 visitors and deploys a major programme of socio-educational actions to share the richness of the ninth art with as many people as possible.

About ADAGP
ADAGP is the French authors’ society for the visual arts. It collects and distributes royalties for nearly 200,000 artists worldwide, 15,500 of whom are in France.
In particular, it manages collective rights (photocopy rights, remuneration for private copying, retransmission via cable, satellite and ADSL, library loans, educational uses, etc.) for more than 1,000 comic and manga authors who are members of ADAGP. The authors’ society also collects the resale rights for original plates and drawings on the art market (auction houses or galleries).
Through its cultural action programme, ADAGP encourages the creative scene by initiating and/or financially supporting projects that enhance the visual arts and promote them nationally and internationally.
